Crowdfunding is increasingly gaining importance as a means of financing for a variety of projects. In our digital age, many entrepreneurs that were formerly overlooked by traditional finance (i.e. VCs, angel investors), are able to gain access to seed capital. This capital can be raised in various forms of crowdfunding, with different types of rewards provided in exchange for funding. This thesis analyses the impact of the selection of different crowdfunding types on the funding success of entrepreneurs. Thereby, it aims to help entrepreneurs in their choice of the most suitable crowdfunding type. The literature review provides insights into the underlying rationale, key success factors, as well as different types of crowdfunding. From the literature review, different hypotheses for the empirical analysis are derived. The empirical analysis is based on data from 200 campaigns of reward-based and equity-based crowdfunding. The statistical analysis of this data shows that campaigns with lower funding targets are more successful in reward-based settings, whereas successful equity-based campaigns have higher funding targets. Furthermore, no evidence for a relationship between overfunding of a campaign and the selected crowdfunding type is found. Additionally, the expected relationship between the experience of a founder and funding success in different crowdfunding types is rejected. Overall, this thesis finds that the selection of a suitable crowdfunding type is important, but also multifaceted and case-specific. For founders, it is important to understand the underlying dynamics of a crowdfunding campaign as well as the fit of their business with the specific crowdfunding type.
