Crowdfunding is the new phenomenon when it comes to raising funds for a creative idea either for a startup company or simply just for an entrepreneur. There are different forms of crowdfunding, however the fundamental principle is that people, the crowd, provide money in order to support a project in exchange for either a share of the company, a product itself or only a satisfaction from helping. Crowdfunding in Slovakia is significantly less popular than in the United States where it was basically created. The reason behind is that it is still a relatively undiscovered topic and people tend to be rather risk averse in Slovakia. On the contrary, the only form of crowdfunding that is popular in Slovakia is donation-based crowdfunding where people support a person, family or a project without expecting anything in exchange. Crowdlending, also known as peer-to-peer lending is principally a type of crowdfunding with the exception that people exchange money between themselves. On one side there are investors looking for a greater return than with traditional term loans and on the other side there are borrowers wishing to get a loan for a lower interest rate in comparison to a bank loan. Crowdlending only emerged in Slovakia in late 2012, but it is already growing at a breathtaking pace.
