The initial situation of this study is the arising of FinTechs which might have an impact on the further development of the traditional banking industry. The objective is to find out whether or not Crowdfunding is an opportunity for banks to innovate their business model. Therefore, first, opportunities, extensibilities and threats of a bank provided Crowdfunding from the perspective of banks, initiators and investors are examined through desk research. Second, based on expert interviews from eight different Swiss banks the study presents which Crowdfunding model is most favorable for banks. The analyses show that banks see Crowdfunding as an opportunity for their business model for three main reasons: First, for gaining market shares, second, for marketing and branding, and third, for acquiring new customers. Moreover, the majority of experts think that the bank for which they are working will provide Crowdfunding in the future. Thereby, the White-Label-Principle model is the most favorable solution for banks. Derived from the interviews and out of an inductive approach the implication and proposal for banks is to position themselves in a premium segment in lending- and equity-based Crowdfunding. By providing donation- and reward-based Crowdfunding regional and community banks in particular can benefit in terms of marketing and branding.
