With an average growth rate of more than 70 percent per year, crowdfunding initiatives on the internet have increased more than nine fold since 2006. Due to a decline of available funds during the recent financial crisis, private individuals, start-up companies, artists, charities and other institutions started to use crowdfunding for covering their financing needs. With five crowdfunding platforms which mainly focus on start-up financing, Switzerland finds itself at a very early stage in this emerging trend. Showing a competitive performance at this point is key for attracting both, new start-ups as well as investors but also to get established within the industry. A measurement of this performance can be seen in the comparison of the cost effectiveness and efficiency of crowdfunding to conventional funding methods. The analysis of two case studies and a set of empirical experiences derived from expert interviews showed that crowdfunding is currently still inferior to conventional funding regarding its cost effectiveness and efficiency. Confirming the case study results, experts name a relatively high administrative effort and high costs caused by commission payments as the main reasons. If critical processes can be standardized, automated and improved, investor protection and regulatory issues solved and industry wide norms developed, crowdfunding has the potential to become a sustainable financing model and a valid alternative to traditional funding instruments.
